In 2018 Schalk Grobler returned to complete a partnership contract with Agrivet forming Agrima. It was a situation where both parties can complement each other in their different activities. After completing the partnership negotiations immediate action was taken by the South Africans and Francois Grobler moved into Sakay after immigrating from South Africa in November 2018. On arrival Agrima was informed that the 1500ha at Kianjaso was not available anymore and a decision was taken to trial 120 Ha of maize on Imehy to gain more knowledge on varieties and its potential.
Our first trial was Irat 200 of which the seed was obtained from Fofiva. After achieving a yield average of only 3 Tons per Ha with a strong fertiliser program our information clearly pointed to seed being the problem as it is not refined and not selected correctly. We also realised that very little modern varieties were available in Madagascar and commercial high intensity farming will not be possible with the varieties available. This led to the decision, to improve seed quality of Local varieties, and invest in new high potential varieties on trials for future commercial activities. The Pan 12 variety was among the first trials and showed yields of 7 tons/ha in certain areas and as little as 1 ton/ha in other areas confirming that soil deviation is a major factor in Madagascar.
Local soya varieties were also on trial and with only 500kg/ha yields due to a lack of refining local varieties and modern new varieties, the result was obvious.
